These type of roses are ideal for planting in a large mass or to separate lawns, concrete dividers or landscaping sections. They make great foreground landscaping plants. Taller plants should be planted towards the background. Many groundcover are very hardy and come in bright and bold colors. They also require less maintenance and pruning.

Groundcover roses will spread wide and low and can help with soil erosion. One single plant can cover up to 40 square ft. Hedge roses are another great landscaping idea. These rose are somewhat smaller but are good for edging, borders, foundations, patios and driveways.

Bed Roses

Roses for beds make a very powerful entrance statement. The best type of roses to use are shrub, floribundas and miniature roses as these will grow to about 3-5 ft tall and provide lots of color during the prime season. You should use taller roses in the middle of the bed surrounded by smaller ones. Shrub Roses are easy care large type of roses. They can grow about 5ft. tall and 5ft. wide. You can use tree roses to make this effect stand out much more.

The climbing rose is named for the climbing habit, they grow best along trellises or arbors. If left alone without any support they can be used as ground cover roses.

Remember to mulch around your roses to reduce weeds and help retain water moisture. And always use rose food for fertilizing a good 10-1-10 analysis will work well. You can apply a balanced fertilizer inside the dripline in a circle about a foot or two from the base.

Trimming your garden roses. Only prune and trim if there is real need to do so. Many folks love pruning because they think it’s time to prune this is especially true at the end of the winter seasons. If your roses look good and they are not obstructing your neighbors or street view leave them alone.

Prune old dying dark brown branches and limbs. Prune off all expired blooms. And prune down to the third or fourth limb
